"The electric light did not come from the continuous improvement of candles." - Oren Harari
I came across this quote today and it jolted some thoughts.
Iteration is great and leads to optimization.
But taking risks and breaking away from the tried and true, is what leads to innovation.
Evolution.
Revolution.
Yet although a light bulb isn't a direct descendant of a candle, the outcomes of its discovery and application are still indisputable improvements over humanity's previous lighting situation.
So yes, do obsess over continuous improvement of your idea, product, or service.
However, experiment with and leave room for novel ideas that potentially might generate transformational outcomes which serve a similar purpose.
